Are you patriotic? What does being patriotic mean to you?

The further you get into your 20s, the less you come to understand borders. A theoretical divide between land that some people declared ownership of, while mandating that others own another piece of land.

Come to realize those same groups restrict travel to what they refer to as their land for reasons that seem fairly archaic and prejudiced. In your 20s, your hankering to explore the world reveals itself, but this luxury isn’t available to everyone.

Travel Requirements

Of course, it’s easiest to travel if you find yourself in possession of a powerful passport that presents the least amount of obstacles to your travel needs. Japan, US, UK, Canada and other such passports will allow you into hundreds of countries with only an identification document and yourself present.

Meanwhile, people of the rest of the world’s population are stuck applying for visas, submitting income statements, employer statements and so on. I should know, as I’ve got self-proclaimed Travel Addiction! But it has to make you think – why some people and not others.

Politics and history have mandated that everyday civilians be governed by laws put into place because of the decisions of government agencies that have nothing to do with their people.

The people had no hand in creating these borders or forging these alliances, and yet they are the ones to suffer the consequences. If you were to plan a friend’s trip for your 20-something year old friends and head off to who knows where, an arbitrary number of you may be ready to jet off at any moment while the others may be saddled with visa applications and wait times.

Travel Fees

The worst part of increased travel requirements is that travel costs obscene amounts of money that very few of us can be making. If you’re looking to travel the world and explore new places in your 20s era with an average paying job and a less than powerful passport, you’re out of luck.

Most visa applications will require you to show proof that you can pay your way in addition to the thousands in application fees that don’t include the normal travel fees.

As a regular person in my 20s with my average job and my average influence, why must I be put through all these obstacles to explore a world that belongs to us all. Regardless of where you believe the universe came from, those who control pieces of it bear no right to limit our explorations of it.

Patriotism

Travel fees, obstacles and requirements are man-made constructs of human oppression that limit us from exploring the world, meeting each other and making friends all over the world.

Patriotism implies that you respect and support your country, land and the rules that govern it. Of course, rules keep the order and prevent our society from crumbling into chaos.

Some rules, however, like to travel limitations, seem a little overly biased towards keeping people divided. Patriotism seems like the byproduct of brainwashed subservience to governments that prefer power over unity.

Clearly, I feel strongly about this, but I’d love to hear what you think. If you enjoyed this blog, feel free to check out other blogs in the In My 20s Era blog series. I also write Book Blogs and fictional Short Stories of various genres.
